Netflix Suddenly Down During Stranger Things Premiere
Netflix went down just as customers were flocking to the video streaming platform to watch the final season of the hit series Stranger Things.
The website DownDetector.com reported Netflix down worldwide. Around 16,000 people reported Netflix down through the website.
Netflix went down ahead of the premiere of the latest season of Stranger Things, which was scheduled to air as planned.
The first four episodes of the fifth and final season of Stranger Things were released this week, followed by three more episodes on December 25th, and the final episode airing on December 31st.
Stranger Things is one of Netflix's flagship series for attracting subscribers to its platform. The end of Stranger Things has reportedly prompted Netflix to acquire new intellectual properties as a source of content.
Netflix is exploring an acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, the media company that owns HBO and the film studio behind DC superhero films like Batman and Superman.
Reuters reported that Netflix is seeking financial advice and has requested access to Warner Bros. Discovery's financial records. Moelis & Co., the investment bank that successfully helped Skydance Media acquire Paramount Global, has been appointed by Netflix to review the acquisition offer.
Owning Warner Bros.' studios would give Netflix a host of iconic characters and franchises, including Harry Potter, Games of Thrones, and DC Comics.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos stated last week that Netflix typically has a tradition of "building rather than buying." However, he confirmed that Netflix would evaluate potential acquisitions based on criteria such as their potential and impact on the content offering to subscribers.
He also indicated that Netflix is not interested in purchasing Warner Bros. Discovery's cable television networks, which include CNN, TNT, and Animal Planet.
"We've been very clear that we're not interested in acquiring legacy media networks,"
Sarandos said.
